Would agree, But, in Australian conditions, as a road car, how much fun can you have in a car that’s so tall geared that redline in 2nd is nearly 10kph faster than our 110kph speed limit? :roll:

I think you'll find the M135i is 3L single turbo. The 1 Series M E82 is 3L twin turbo.

BMW E82 135i
2 door Coupe
3.0 litre twin turbo
225 kW and 400 Nm

BMW F20 M135i
5 door hatch
3.0 litre twin scroll (single) turbo valve tronic
240 kW 450 Nm

Hey all happy debaters. It's the OP here. So glad you are all enjoying debating the topic so much!

My conclusion is:

86 isn't an option if you already have a super charged NA8 Clubman because the 86 is way too slow. Just naming a few slow things, glaciers, snails, turtles on land and 86/ BRZ's.

BMW 130i seemed good because it's got a sweet BMW smooth as silk 6 in it. (Plus it was much cheaper than the 86!)

So the NA8 and BMW 130i make for a nice pair of very different cars. Couldn't be happier with my choice, but maybe I shoulda got the 135I.... :? :roll:

Its really silly to label 86/brz as slow. The performance is quite adequate. It will also be run a lot cheaper over the years than probably any of the Euro imports. If speed performance was such an issue then Mazda would never have put a 1500cc eng in the ND either.

The problem with the Toybaru is that it feels slow because you feel the “hole” in the power delivery between 3000 & 5000. So when you are pressing on with it you have to keep the thing on the boil to avoid getting caught in the hole...and whilst you can sit it between 5000 and the 7400 cutout all day, it’s not a sweet engine and it never really sounds like it wants to be thrashed.

The ND1 2.0 is lovely and linear and torquey and even though it doesn’t match the Toybaru’s numbers, it feels stronger through most of the rev range and it’s a sweeter engine. ND2 2.0 sounds like it takes the best bits of the ND1 2.0 and adds a zingy top end. The Toybaru’s problem is that the engine is not a particularly likeable engine.

Yup, driving at over 5000 rpm is quite unappealing for a daily, I must have gotten old or something. I can see how it likely would be entertaining on a track though.

I think there might be some confusion here as well between the 1 Series M Coupe (250kW/450Nm) using an enhanced twin-turbo N54 engine, the N54 E82, and the F20 you quoted which was running the N55 twin-scroll single.
