Feel like car is alive?

Postby DavidinPerth » Sat Oct 06, 2018 10:32 am

This might sound crazy but whenever I get to my MX5 (it’s kept in a storage facility as no room at home) I feel like it is “alive” somehow, and waiting for me to take it out. Rationally I know this is ridiculous but still it’s there...

Anyone else experienced this?

Welcome to MX5 ownership. :D It's good to see that you "get" these cars already. I know plenty of people who've had theirs for more than 20 years and the feeling is just the same. I always feel like I'm taking a puppy out for a walk when I drive mine out the gate.

It's a "car-nut" thing. We attribute "life" to things that we love. It's a kind of empathy with an inanimate object. It's made all the more real by the fact that a sensitive car like the MX5 "responds" to our directions - more like a smart dog than a lawnmower.

Musical instruments do this, some cars, motorcycles and so on. The reward comes from little input for large gain. In a nutshell, either beauty OR amplification. There is no greater thrill than pushing your foot down on an accelerator pedal, or twisting the throttle open on a bike or strumming a chord on a guitar plugged into a 100 watt marshall amp. It's all about return for effort.

Stephen King

I've not read it, but you'll probably know the story, it's been adapted into a few films etc, and has become somewhat of a TV trope.

Look at your cars, they are riddled with character and personality and then you turn the key. When I first researched purchasing an MX-5 the one thing that kept coming back was the advice that I should extend my Sunscreen budget and spend more time smiling. Just enjoy. Greg.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?
