My old favourites...from back in the 80's a late 70's Escort Rallye Pack I use to see around often with the custom plate ARFAV8.

And around the same period a local woman who owned a Porsche 911 Turbo with the flares and whale tail with the plate NEI-469 ...

- love it!

(would have NO clue what it was without the plate surround though).
Don't worry about dying, worry about not living!

If it takes more than a few seconds to figure it out, forget it.

Instant gratification much? :|

Some of those that meet this test are fun, but nothing beats the challenge of seeing what is an obvious personalised plate, and trying to decypher it :D 8)

I'm struggling more with the concept of Bruce actually understanding the original significance than the plate's "obvious" clues ... ... that said, I recognised the clues but could not for the life of me bring to memory the name of it's origin. Getting old, would have been instant years ago - gave up and had to Google

Licence plates are usually only glimpsed for a few seconds so need to get the message across reasonably quickly (else why get one).

Why doesn't everybody just do the cryptic crossword and not tell anybody? Nobody cares that much. At least the crossword doesn't need to be washed and stuff.

No way, not 'usually' at least.

What are you doing Bruce when you are stopped at the traffic lights, crawling along in traffic, cruising along the freeway in traffic? I know that, amongst other things, I look at the number plates. And they are in my field of vision for much longer than a few seconds.
