NA hardtop weight?

Postby bruce » Sat Mar 25, 2023 11:50 am

Hi,
Has anyone weighed their hardtop? I'm guessing 20 to 25 kgs.
I weighed my car yesterday. Visited my local tip/recycling centre and rolled directly onto the scales, 1320 kgs. As I rolled off I stopped and got the rear weight at 600kg (my logic is correct?).
Weight included me, full fuel tank, hardtop. Thus a net weight of 1200 kgs approx. Note my car is not really an mx5 anymore...

Bit of searching on a US forum; someone actually weighed theirs, 45.5 pounds = 20.638 kgs

Important to make sure you don't have a fat hardtop, Bruce.
Too many Maccas and chips will result in a reduction in performance.

If tank is original then 40 litres of fuel is 40kgs plus 20kgs for the HT sounds about right bearing in mind the original NA6 HTs were a bit lighter than later HTs. So if you're 60kgs then 1320kgs - 120kgs = 1200kgs.

Unleaded fuel is more like 0.73kg per litre (water is 1kg per 1L) so 40L fuel would be under 30kgs.

Sorry Bruce just made you 10kg fatter…. :D

Weighed mine many years ago shortly after painting, all new seals, etc. I remember clearly because I thought it was a suspiciously round number, but it was exactly 20kg according to my highly accurate bathroom scales.

When I did it? No... but that was because I bought a second hand hardtop in fairly poor condition. Most of the seal had already perished to the point where it had fallen out on it's own. I reckon a light breeze would have removed the window for me.

Can't comment on a decent one sorry Bruce.
