miata.net VERY touchy about politics

Postby Lokiel » Wed Apr 05, 2023 9:35 am

Someone started the following thread on miata.net which included a list:

MX-5 Miata Forum > Road Kill > The Water Cooler (Off Topic) > The top ten smartest animals in the world...... what do you think?
(see https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=768158)

... and the first response was:

"Don’t see Homo “sapiens” on there. Makes sense.

... I posted a response and received the following infraction notice (which includes my post):

Rich DID at least recognise that it was humorous but considered it a breach of their laws regarding political statements on the site :(

Geez, that's certainly pushing pretty hard on the "no politics" rule - but then I see the political "discourse" on miataturbo.net and think, maybe it's for the best...

So you are basically saying that their leader (president) is dumb and you don't expect a response? C'mon...
Posting that on this forum would probably lead to deletion as well.

Wouldn't have been long after Obama got in I made some reference to the election over there. Someone responded something to the effect of "we don't comment on whatever bush creatures you guys elect down there". I replied "didn't you guys elect two different Bush creatures?"

Whole exchange deleted almost immediately and (I assume) warnings all round.

The response I posted I remembered and found from the Trump presidency period (I forwarded it to my USA workmates at the time and they all begrudgingly agreed with it - big difference between educated folk and red-necks).
I'd like to think that the comment would "slide" here though since Aussies are generally free to say what they think of politicians, the comment was absolutely true, and it was amusing (even the moderator agreed with that).

Yeah, BTDT Rascal. Very touchy, though I did find out some interesting things about their 'militias' from one who was prepared to discuss dispassionately.

Can't be bothered visiting those areas of the site these days, better things to do with my time.

Haven't done so directly but on MT.net in the past have suggested that gun availability IS the problem with regard to US mass shootings.
BIG MISTAKE!
I got "rained on" by almost every US forumite about how WRONG/STUPID/NAIVE I was, they NEEDED their guns for self protection and to protect themselves against their OWN government (they seem to think that they can hold off their own military - seriously?).
Common sense and world statistics (US vs everywhere else, including South Africa where gun ownership is almost mandatory for home protection but mass shootings rarely occur) can't convince them of anything other than "The solution is MORE guns!".

Politics and Guns should NEVER be discussed with US folk - in the former case they tend to be extremely right or left wing with little regard for "the common good" and in the latter case "paranoid psychos"!

One of former US President Barrack Obama's biggest laments was that he could do NOTHING about the proliferation of guns in the US.
Naively he thought he could actually do something about it as the president ut realised that was NOT the case.

It doesn't say "Americans", it says "humans". He's dunking on himself as much as anyone else, and it isn't supporting any political entity over another, which is why I think it's pretty harmless on the "no politics" front.

+1
The text NEVER mentioned politics or individuals.
It just goes to show how bad Trump was and that he was "elected" by the US that everyone ASSUMES who the text is referring to ;^)

In spite of my forum handle, I don’t have much in common with the Yanks.

I once suggested on MT.net that postage from the US to here was a killer, but at least we don’t have Trump or guns. As a consequence, I have collection of neg cats.

I have many relatives there, and there is little point trying to present an alternative view when they already know it to be wrong.
