If money is not an issue why not try the Yokohama A050 and see how's that compared. I have never had Hankok but the A050 are very good R-spec tyres, very grippy but also very consistent throughout it's whole life (stay grippy until bald).


I have been told they Hankook and Yoko R-specs most 'grippy' when they are bald.
Also told the Hankooks are competitive with the Yokos.

Money is an issue, I need to get the right cost/benefit balance.

I'm not yet ready to change the geometry/setup from what was working so well for Dan so I'll wait till next year for slicks.
I have 3 rounds of the MX-5 cup this year, all at Wakefield. I will run those on R-Specs of some sort.

I can get Hankook Ventus TD Z221s 215/45R17 for $336 each fitted.
Kumho V70A 205/40ZR17 for $260 each fitted (perfect for the 7" rims, a bit narrow for the 8" rims)
Kumho V70A 225/45ZR17 for $305 each fitted (just on max' width for 8" rims)
Federal RS-R 215/45R17 would be $144 + fitting but unavailable.
Federal RS-RR 215/45R17 for $145 + fitting
Hankook RS3-R 215/45R17 for $137.50 + fitting

So where to now?
Thinking I'll try the cheap route but what are people's thoughts on Federal RS-RR vs Hankook RS3

Hankook just released the RS4, I was quoted a ridiculously cheap price for 18" RS3's about six months ago.

St George tyres in Sydney show Nitto NT01 in your size for $175 ea.

If you bought Dan's car and you have Hankooks, they are probably the set I sold him (they were new and unused). They are Z221s and you can get them from JDMYard at a pretty competitive price as they parallel import them.

Pretty damned good tyre and close enough to A050s without the bank busting price.

Those Nittos are 2014 production.
I have 5 hankook z221s on 8" Enkei rims. Dan said he got them from Gary's Motorsport Tyres. I can get them there for $336 each fitted.
Yokohamas are around $500
Im thinking of going for the Federal RS-RRs for $145 each + fitting (st george).
However i changed the wheels this afternoon in preparation for tomorrow at Wakefield and took the opportunity to weigh them.
17x8 Enkeis with just about worn out Hankook z221s 215/45R17 were 19.8, 20.2, 20.0, 20.0 and 20.1 kg
17x7 Mazda stock rims with half worn Michelin Pilot Sport 3s were 17.3, 17.1,17.3 and 17.2 kg.
This has me thinking I might be best off using the 17x7" rims and 205/40R17 tyres.

Hi Nuddy, you mentioned you intend on doing the last 3 rounds of the MX5 Cup this year. Round 4 is in just over two weeks away and entries will close in around 10 days.

Apu was right, I got the last 4 from Apu as he was selling them cheap but all of the previous sets I got from Gary's.

To be honest my fastest times were done on 235 tyres and they are in my opinion faster than 215's so I'd probably go for 225's or 235's if you are replacing tyres.

The wider wheels could be faster or equivalent despite the slightly lower weight of the 17x7's (or buy the TC105N's I still have for sale which are lighter than the stock wheels and 1" wider as well).

Kuhmo's or Nitto's are good bang for buck and if I was like you doing a ton of track days I'd consider using them until you are doing 11's and can make use of the extra grip of Z221's or A050's since they are basically half the price.

Never tried AD08R's personally and probably never will because from what I can evidently see is they are not as good as the internet forums hype them up to be.

I do not have a direct comparison in my car on them but I have seen how they perform when others have used them who I would trust to be a good gauge.
At Wakefield, I repeatedly went 1s a lap faster on NT01's than Hankook RS-3's. At SMSP the difference is 2s. Over here the guys that are good gauges that have tried both RS-3 and AD08R's are generally a little faster on the RS-3's. My main competitor is good proof of this as he was also faster on Kumho KU36's as well as the RS-3's than AD08R's.

Yes, they are not an R spec so can't be directly compared to one, but they are Near the top of the S spec tree

I have used both NT01s and AD08s back to back on same day and there was about 1.5 secs diff between the two tyres, which is comparable to other S specs.

And my AD08s and NT01s were same price ($170ea) both in 205/50/15

OK 1.5 seconds/lap difference is not "very close" IMO.
Overpriced? If an item is overpriced it will not sell. That's how pricing works. They sell well so they are 'right priced'. If demand exceeds supply the item is underpriced and the price should rise until the demand reduces to equal supply.

Over marketed? Surely not. They are selling well.
If they were not selling they could perhaps be under marketed, or could be just rubbish.

Overhyped - maybe. That could be fair criticism. But it could be just good marketing.

So AD08 and NT01 are same price but NT01 is 1.5 seconds/lap faster so why would one buy the AD08? Better road tyre? Longer tyre life?

I might end up with AD08 as road tyres when the Michelins need replacing but for track days, supersprints and racing I will use R-spec

I'm inclined to stick with the Hankooks that seem to be equal or very close to equal in performance to the Yokohamas at significantly less cost.

I didn't wear the Hankooks out on Thursday as I didn't get on the track (immobiliser trouble) so It's not as urgent.

On Dan's advice I will go to 225 or 235 on the 8" rims - probably Hankooks at this stage.

Medical done, application submitted, OLT passed, online lecture/assessment passed. Should have the CAMS PC licence next week.
Logbook for the car is next on the list + enter for the day.
