6ul Wheel Failure

Anybody seen anything like this with 6ul's before? I am running them and was considering another set, hoping this is not common!!

Footage from my vehicle and Phil who was following will eventuate.

Basically turned into turn 3 heading uphill at Wakefield Parkway on my second lap of the second session, the unloaded rim decided to give way. The outside is believed to have torn first, the centre made contact with the ground and eventually fell apart. I slide for approx.. 10 metres on my right rear rotor.

No apparent damage to engine or vehicle, pride is bruised.

Thanks for all who asked if I was okay and helped pick the car up so we could get a jack under it.

Drove home on a spare, many thanks to Mr Green for that, I do appreciate it.

This is just a warning for what can and likely will happen at some point in time.

This is the first one I've seen, but I've heard of it and spoken to someone who has. I've mentioned it in the other thread, and was only speaking with Suspense about this exact thing happening the week before.

So it appears not to be a one-off, and as Hjt mentioned in his thread, please go and check your wheels carefully.

I wanted to make sure that the motor-sport crowd were aware of it (hence posting in the general motor sport section).

Do you know which generation the wheels were? I know from gen1 to gen2 they changed the casting process presumably to minimize the chance of included defects but I am not sure what the difference is with the gen3?

Another 6ul blown at the FOSC today. Don't know if he is turbo'd (and therefore how much power he was putting down).

Was turn 10 onto the straight. Poor bugger.

I don't know if turbo or not turbo would make much difference. The torque on the fronts in hard braking would be far higher than the torque you'd ever get from an engine.

That's not a good advert for the product. The MX-5 isn't exactly a heavy car. I think I'll be purchasing Enkei or SSR.
