NA/NB Dash Phone/Logger/Laptimer RAM Mount

Postby takai » Wed Jun 13, 2018 3:57 pm

The final part of my RAM mount setup finally came in from Amazon, so i popped it all together in the car, and it has turned out to be a pretty good mount for lap timing. Hence I thought it might be of interest in this forum.

Basically its made up of three components, the first is a 1" ball mount attached to an aluminium 90deg bracket and bolted to the centre mounting hole on the dash:

The second bit is a long RAM arm:

And the third bit is an aluminium threaded phone mount that clamps to the phone, with another RAM 1" ball bolted to it:

It has a pretty good clamp securing it to the phone like so:

Although a ziptie could also be used for further security.

I got the long RAM arm, as i figured the phone being closer would help. This is what it looks like from the drivers seat:

But a shorter or standard length arm would work too, just depends on how long you want. Also RAM do mounts for a ton of other things, so if i end up with the AIM Solo 2 down the track, then there is a mount for that too which only requires buying a new end ball.

The bits i used were:
RAM 1" ball mount: https://www.amazon.com/Mount-Motorcycle ... 005J43I56/
RAM long arm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WJA5ZY/

In hindsight i probably should have got the M6 threaded version for the phone end, but its not in stock currently. The setup i have uses a sleeve, washer and M6 nyloc nut.

Its quite a versatile setup, and allows the entire arm and mount to be removed, leaving only the dash ball which is quite unobtrusive.

Thanks to Dean for the idea from his NB track car.

me too! how was the initial ball mounted to the dash? do you need to take the dash apart?

The 'long' arm may give you vibration and you may need to check with some tracks if it is an acceptable mount. Some require a tether as well in case it comes loose.

The last Club trackday (AASA permit I think) required the driver to certify that the camera/datalogger is mounted 'in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions as applied for use in motorsport', and the scrute to sign as having sighted the mounting.

I agree, the longer the arm, the worse the vibration. On my camera mount, I use the shortest arm available and keep it as close to vertical as possible. My Solo has the wiring at the bottom which means it can't be mounted sitting on the dash, mine is mounted to a RAM ball behind the mirror, with a vertical extension locating it a little below the mirror.

I suspect that keeping the arm vertical will reduce the vibration, using it horizontally will maximise the vibration - that is my working hypothesis anyway.

Its just bolted to the captive mount in the firewall that the dash secures to.

No movement or vibration and no issues from scrutineers, even ones who argue with the VIC senior scrutineers. I even brought it up when the car was logbooked, no issues.

would a suction cup phone holder to the front quarter window also work? problem with it more likely falling off though....
