Repair floppy cup holder lid

Postby drckarcher » Sat Jun 23, 2018 4:06 pm

Eventually I found the time to fix the floppy cupholder lid in my MK2.5

The lid is floppy when the spring feather mechanism fails. When the plastic hook holding the feather in place breaks, the feather slips off the central pin.

This is what it should look like:

In this pic you can see that the little plastic hook has snapped off:

The repair is easy and takes about 20 minutes.

Watch this video on how to remove the centre console: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsMCkpL24NI

The problem and one repair option is described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiX8WxA9DEk

I used a slightly different solution.
I drilled two little holes just below the pin, approx 5mm apart.

I fed a cable tie through the holes

Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your fix.

I did a different fix by putting a washer around the post with the hole up the middle of it and using a screw down the middle of that hole to stop it coming off.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
