Original SE floor mats?

New old stock replacements are no longer available....... A forum member here had a set new in the bag a few years ago that I tried to buy but after some initial discussion he went quiet and stopped responding.

Ironically my SE has SP floormats! Go figure....

There are replica replacement 'blank' mats out there but I've seen variable reports on the quality.
If you can supply a sample replica embroidery should be possible, it's just a question of the cost.

Mine has plain black mats with red stitching, they're a perfect match for the rest of the interior and I think they are probably the ones it came with looking at the fit and finish; but they don't have the neat SP-style badge.

I know two people who would most likely buy those mats if you wanted to sell them.

As for getting new SE mats, the best way to do it is to buy a set of OEM mats, pick out the embroidery for MX-5, and get the SE logo embroidered on. Doing it that way means there is no quality drop. I have quality embroidery graphics for the SP when I had it done, I could change it to SE and so a bunch of mats if people wanted them.

I'd be up for buying that! I did think of the same thing (buying OEM and "fixing") but thought I'd have to add the SE above the MX-5 logo. Didn't think of unpicking it. Nice.

Hopefully more SE folks would like the same! If you need me to send a better image of the SE logo I can. But it looks *very* similar to the SP one

I don't have an SE so I won't organise this, but if someone wants to make it happen I'm happy to do the work. If someone wants a one off you're welcome to PM me. It would be the cost of the mats +shipping + about $150-$200 in altering the graphics and getting the embroidery re-done.

Got some genuine Mazda MX-5 floor mats from MX-5 Mania (speedy delivery, A+++), but - and absolutely no offence at all to MX-5 Mania - the quality of the mats is a step down from the OEMs I have for the SE from 2004. Seems almost a different fabric, certainly much less plush. I'm sure we've all dríven our cars barefoot haven't we??

I'm sure it's the usual situation that over time, quality for products steadily drops. It's so common I wish the English language had a word for it! Mazda are no more guilty of it than any other large company.

So... At the risk of losing street cred that I didn't have anyway, I'll look at trying to reproduce the exact same mats. Same quality, same shape (they are weirdly different too), same logo (white, although somewhat hard to tell...). I'll try to post my progress here. First stop a carpet place I think, so they can compare & contrast the quality of the pile (if that's right).

Getting products embroidered is not an expensive process. Examples- hats for Clubs or jackets etc. I have sourced hats for a car club and can buy hats embroidered and cheaper than buying a cap from the local shops flogging some else brands. We could sell a hat for $10 and breakeven. As for car carpets they certainly do vary in quality though the ones that not always the more supple still wear well. If Clubs or organisations want a logo embroidered they merely need some art work which the supplier can use to set up the logo and name etc. I would think that a standard carpet is good enough.

Hi folks/anyone still checking out this thread,

It's been a heck of a while (you know, pandemic, etc.) but I've made some progress here! Who knew floor mats were so involved? In no particular order:

• Found a carpet/auto floor supplier with identical to original colour/pile/quality (not thin like the current replacements), got a sample
• Found someone to do the edging
• Found a supplier of the retainer clips, got a few. Learnt how to make a hole in the mat to fit the clips.
• Easily the hardest part = Special "SE" embroidery. VERY hard to find a company (anywhere) to do embroidery on such a tough/thick material, requiring specialised equipment. Usually embroidery is done on T-shirts, etc. (or even leather like @lambertius above), which is much easier. I searched & searched, even contacted Mazda to see what company did the embroidery in the first place (they have long gone out of business, sadly), BUT finally I seem to have found someone willing to give it a go, and last night just finished designing a "logo" version of the "SE" embroidery, going off the original mats I have. Also used the "SP" decal/logo as inspiration too, as it's obviously based on that.

The plan also is to cut it to original shape, which differs from the replacement Mazda ones. I'd be interested in knowing if the original SP floor mats are the same shape as the SE ones. I feel the SE ones were just a repeat of the SP with a different letter

So all in all I think we're talking a pretty faithful reproduction! Perhaps even for the SP folks as well as SE. I won't start celebrating just yet, let's see how we go from here...................................................

Interested to see how it goes. I bought an SE about a month ago, it has the mats in pretty good condition but a new set would be good.

Glad to see things progressing, still interested in a set for the SE, maybe even two (price dependent) as country living means the mats get a hard life.

I haven't been in this forum for years now having sold my NB in 2015 and I only came here today to see if I could get an idea of what SE mats are worth to list on EBay.

I have a brand new set of OEM SE mats unopened in the original packaging and including the mounting bracket that comes with them. I've had these packed away in the garage in Qld for years and I had them awhile before I sold the NB.

No idea how to post a pic here anymore sorry but if anyone is interested, tell me how to post a pic or I can text you a pic?

I'm located in SA now and given how heavy these are, postage would be a killer but not a deal breaker I suppose? No idea what they are worth so happy for offers if anyone is interested?

When logged in, just below the first 'submit' button, you'll see a 'filename' & 'file comment' field. Click on 'browse' to locate the pic file then click on 'add the file' below that. Then just move the cursor to where you want the pic in the post & click on the 'place inline' button just below the text field.

Step by step that's:
Click on 'post reply' (below)
See 'Attachments' tab (just below left of 'submit' button)
Click on 'Add files' button
From file upload dialog box select folder where files reside & then select file
Then click 'open'
Then see 'Attachments' tab (below the 'submit' button)
Click on 'Place inline'
Repeat for each pic
Then click on 'submit'

Five pics per page with above method, so if you've got more, just do a second or third post.

There's a number of ways to resize pics, but an automatic & easy to do it in bulk if using the Windows OS is:

Using Windows Explore (right click on bottom left green start button) right click on photo file - select 'send to' & 'mail recipient' - then you'll be given the option to resize photo - click 'ok'. This will open an Outlook email which you can then click on the 'File' pull down menu to select 'save attachments'. If you have more than one photo, then just hold down the 'Ctrl' key while selecting the others - they will then all attach to the email & you can use 'save attachments' to capture them all. You should then find Outlook has resized pics to something useable on the forum.
