Genchi genbutsu!

Take the air filter off and have a look at the throttle plates. Wiggle the throttle bodies to see if they are mega loose.

Problems fixed - as had been suggested it was a throttle plate problem. Took off all my filters and trumpets/horns from the itbs and found one throttle plate was jammed open because of a small piece of filter mesh (!) has broken off and jammed it open. Those filters are gone! Very lucky the piece got stuck and didn't go any further.

Thanks for everyone's assistance.

Well, that piece got stuck... Are you sure there weren't any other pieces missing?

I don't think I'd be using that style/brand of filter again.

Yes, I'd be more concerned regards what has already been sucked into the engine.

This.

I have had three throttle plate screws from the TB go through my engines, worst that happened was a small mark on the squish area of the head. Nevertheless, not recommended, especially if there is a snail hanging off the exhaust side ...

If it is going to be a problem you will know about it quickly, otherwise just learn the lesson about avoiding another incident. Preferably faster than I learnt mine   .

Agree - what is done is done and cannot be undone.

I pulled of the inlet manifold - found another piece of filter twisted around a valve stem but with no apparent damage (fingers crossed). Engine was running well in short stationary run prior to removing the manifold. If anything got any further it is not apparent to me and I'll just have to wear it if it has:(.

I had pieces of the valve guides break off & go through the combustion chamber. thanks to bent valves. My engine is interference

the head had a little damage bit nothing that wasn't fixable. Thankfully it was all aluminum.

That head is totally fine & is on my current engine .

if it was steel or some serious hard material..... probably may not have been so easy to fix

My pieces were all aluminium. I have reconstructed the material I found together with the relevant filters and it appears I have recovered/found all the pieces that broke free. I am hoping that is the case and I can again enjoy the car without the worry of major engine damage.
