Thanks all for the comments, opinions and feedback. I've gone with the KYB Excel-G (same as GR-2 in different colour and sticker) as they seemed to have the most recommendations. I'm sticking with the standard springs due to living in a rural location with rough roads (including some dirt sections). My daily driver is a 4WD with long travel suspension and large tyres, so the MX-5 with standard suspension has outstanding handling characteristics in comparison.

My partner's NA had the Excel-G

They're a fine shock, if you are happy with the factory ones you'll be happy with the Excel-G since they're made to pretty similar specs.
