16s are too small, resulting in too high a tyre profile. 17s are a must.

Nothing wrong with a bit of sidewall, makes the ride more comfortable. Personally I hate super low profile tyres.

I think danx5 has increased his overall rolling diameter so the speedo reads accurately. I just did a comparison, the old diameter was 616.3mm, the new is 631.4mm. The result is the wheel well is very full on his car, which looks a little odd, but as long as the tyre isn't hitting anything on compression or lock, then I say it's all good!

Spot on Lachy. Not exactly my 1st MX-5 as all
my vehicles are modified by to suit me. While I have 2 sets of 17s, the roads in parts of Melbourne are requiring a fat sidewall tyre. Surprisingly I was quicker on the track with the 16s than with the 17s and I am not alone in choosing this combination for good reason. Speedo now matches GPS speed. Those keyboard warriors who think this car is better lowered 30+mm I challenge them to drive anywhere with speed bumps and steep driveways without losing the front clip or worse.

I'm NOT a fan of low-profile tyres and higher profile tyres DOESN'T always detract from performance.

There was an Australian TopGear episode (the Australian-produced version, not the TopGear guys in Australia) where they ran a "top-spec" HSV Commodore around their track, then "downgraded" to a higher-profile and cheaper rim and cut 2 seconds off their best lap time!
- The "Top Spec" version came with MUCH more expensive rims and tyres, was slower and would have been much more uncomfortable to drive.

I literally shudder when I see low-profile tyres on a car, it brings back memories of driving Gina (2004 MSM/SE) from Melbourne to Brisbane when I bought her to when I got rid of them. Every bump jolted through my body and hitting potholes or large bumps felt and sounded like I'd damaged the rim.

Most NB MSM/SE owners "upgrade" from the OEM 17" rims to 15" or 16" rims for a better ride, better performance (acceleration/turning/braking), less pad/rotor wear, cheaper rims and cheaper tyres.
Don't worry about dying, worry about not living!

Gee, I didn't know you dislike 17 inch wheels...
