Don't bother with the US diagrams, the Aussie ones are different, and after looking around I think the imports are different too. The very early Aussie delivered cars have it located under the dash on the same bracket as the indicator flasher can. I think the imports have some door buzzer thingy in this place though.

Good luck :D

The diagram I posted is from the 1990 Mazda (Japan) MX-5 Workshop manual.

I pulled the tail light fuse on my 1995 and the headlights and pop ups work normally with it removed. I doubt there would be any difference for the pre-1995.

Ok, still can't find the retractor relay  , I'm sure someone out there with Aussie or Jap MX who would have had to replace one in the past. I found the \"Retractor\" fuse but no the relay.

Have you had a good look around under the dash as suggested by zoomzoom? I believe it's under there somewhere.

I'll have a better look but so far couldn't find anything under there that relates to headlights.

That diagram is precisely the same as the ones posted on page one by Kitkat and myself :? However, the relay is not in the engine bay of Australian (or Japanese?) market cars.

Hey all, finally figured out that pop-up headlight issue. Please see details, you might find it useful at some stage.

On my 89' Import NA
------------------------
Retractor relay is in engine bay, passenger side.
Image

On my 91 Aussie NA
-----------------------
Rectractor-relay was found underneath steering column mounted on the same bracket as the flasher/indicator relay...thanks for the heads-up zoomzoom
Image

inspect solder joints and tracks for stress and reflow if required...

You can see the cracks on mine, I reflow reassemble and it's like new again.

Well done Minh. The hardest part is actually finding that relay.

And here years later another bunny has been looking for the retractor relay and ya hoo after reading the above I finally found mine also under the steering wheel. Keep up the communication it helps more than you think. Now I can have a beer.
Cheers

I think you will find if you read the manual the Mazda advises using the pop up light switch rather than the headlight control to raise the lights. Not sure why it makes any difference but apparently enough to warrant a mention.Hope all goes well,

Peter.
