So I have a Bad COP on Patchy.
It’s a Toyota COP of some sort . It worked. It fits. But I’m looking at getting a whole new set that everyone is familiar with

Now I was looking on eBay . There is a massive price difference in Cops suitable for the NA/NB

Which ones are best?
I don’t mind paying good $$for something that is Decent.
But I hate buying something & realising they just inflated prices on Ebay

I’m looking specifically at the 90080-19015

I’ve currently got the 90919- 02240
I’ll keep 3 as spares. My guess is that it’s better to keep all of the same

I bought a set of 6 90919-02236 out of a V6 Lexus in the USA. They cost me about $50 and the four in the car have worked without problem on an OEM ECU for 6 or 7 years.

On the other hand I lent 2 to Patrick and he blew them both within 10 minutes. It mostly depends on how well/badly your ECU is set up.

  1. Get a tool to check the COPS first.
  2. Check the plug/connector as these get VERY brittle with age and could be the 'cause' of a miss fire.
  3. Check the plug gap

I know the above because.....

Useful tool to have they also have one to check injectors.

Stan, I used 90919-02244 on the racecar for about eight years with no problem (Haltech PS1000). Not sure what differences there are with 90080-19015, but I doubt there is anything 'wrong' about 90919-02244 in an MX5 application, more likely either simply a bad COP, or something in your settings.

Really, I heard that the Yaris were more sensitive to voltage drop, if the voltage drops to 12v the yaris coil would loose over 50% of joule output and more than likely cause a breakdown!

It shouldn't drop to 12 volts with the alternator running, at high duty cycle (RPM) voltage drop may be an issue, so run a large positive wire to them.

Interesting, some empirical data. I guess that higher output coils would likely have longer dwell time to charge them and/or much higher input current, hopefully the ECU is capable of switching the higher current without blowing up the output transistors inside the ECU.

so there is this comparison between R35 COP's & the standard Yaris ones

for a street N/A car know don't need to go to the length of doing the LS1 coils.

But it seems the R35 Cops are in the similar league to them. Would that be correct?

Price will come into it no doubt. On an Norm asp engine I'd imagine the Bosch Yaris ones would be a good option. I got mine from a wreckers ($20 each) but haven't used them yet, they are there for when and if my original coils ever fail. If you do dwell the COPS too long they will most likely die prematurely from overheating. TBH I'm still running the original NA8 coils on my 10 pound boost motor and never had any issues with any signs of misfiring up to 7200 RPM. Don't overthink it. The COPS need about half the dwell of the stock coils. edit: as detailed above.

Anybody got access to a Yaris and an oscilliscope? You could see what toyota engineers dwelled them at! Common figures around the internet though is 1.9 to 2.1 mS. If you dwell too long then the coil will saturate and overheat. (That's the nature of inductors in a DC circuit)

well Ive used the 3.5 ms for cranking & 2.5 ms for my current ones. Thats ever so slightly longer than what you were saying eralier but standard is like 8 or 9ms. I cant recall.

These coils start the E85 real well. although it must be said its not that cold yet. Bt compared to the standard plugs & coil these are awesome to start. Could also be my setting in Ms2 but Ive found the journey much easier with standard cams than the slightly bifgger one. But part of that is that I think ive picked up a few things since
