The start of a street registered track warrior

Postby chrons_rotary » Sat Oct 12, 2013 7:55 pm

Hi guys, just bought myself a nice little red 93 MX5 Clubman from boyracer today.
Kinda new to MX5s, but owning a 1980 Rx7 for almost 5 years kinda makes me feel the same way about lightweight Mazdas.
Plans are to sell off the Rx and start getting the Mx sorted for hillclimbs and supersprints, while still being road legal. Not sure where to start, but like NitroDann always says "needs more boost" :P
This time ill take my time and do the mods properly the first time, so i dont have to upgrade anything more than once.

Ken.

Haha, we can work on your car tomorrow, put those brakes on and look at where to put that Wideband gauge.

Based on your title have a read of Charlie91's build, that is if going turbo.

Yeah, love the look of this car, and saw it in the FF&R mag few months back, small part of the reason of buying an MX5 was due to that car, looks awesome and probably drives better.

Have a read of Charlie's thread, see what worked/did not work and learn from his mistakes :) However some of the credit for Charlie's car must be given to MX5 Plus as well.

G'day Ken, welcome to the forum. I'll be trying to do some more hillclimbs and such in the next few months, so I'm sure we'll cross paths at some point.

OK, when I get back from broken hill in a week am going to start with the modifications, I have already made a 2.5L oil catch can and have ordered an AGI half cage which should be ready in the next week or 2.

I'm in need of some suggestions on where to start first, be it suspension, engine performance (turbo), braking, or wheels/tyres.

Just want to get some ideas on where to best spend my money first.
I currently have a completely stock NA8 clubman, apart from a sports muffler and Redline Comfort Gas shocks

Cheers,
Ken.

Best mod is to sell it and buy mine, or an NB8B. Costs too much to get earlier ones to go as fast.

What is the major performance differences between the NA8 and the later NB series?
Also half the fun is working on the car myself.
Not looking to make it the fastest mx5 around just looking to make a quick streeter.

Cheers,
Ken.

Late NB gets the torsen, bigger brakes and 6 speed straight up, along with a little more power.

but it's heavier.

Much of a muchness for a street car.

So the late 93 Clubmans came with a viscous LSD?
Also is the 6 speed too short ratio for a turbo'd 1.8?

Cheers,
Ken.

Not with the 3.9 or 3.6 ratio diff.

Yeah i think the clubman has a 1.8L torsen diff (EDIT).

Don't stress a bit of boost and some good brake pads and coilovers and you will have something plenty quick enough for some fun and a bit of a play on the track :)
