Well, the White Mouse didn’t stay fixed for long.

About 1.5 minutes driving at the Lakeside DTC to be approximate. :-(

Parts Inside the gearbox have been rearranged into non-optimal configuration for the transmission of drive. :DIY:

Last round of the SCMSC’s competition on the DTC track.

I can’t complain, it really has been a hard life for it.

Crunchy no move-y

Postby The American » Tue Dec 17, 2019 8:24 am

Tuba? Thanks Lightyear.

Hopefully my 'later' model Miata Roadster Shifter fits this. Given that SE's were a later NB development, my guess/hope is that it will fit.

Here is the over-exuberant launch and gear change that ended in crunchy noises and no drive from 2nd gear.

Fairly sure the gearshift itself is the same between late/early and 5/6 speed, it’s just the cup/bush on the end that is different.

I somehow ended up with a 5 speed shifter in a 2001 6speed, which (not surprisingly) had a horrible sloppy shift action.
I bought a MR roadster shifter hoping it would fix it, yet was the same sloppiness, just a shorter throw :frown:

A few emails back and forth with Bill from MR and we worked out the cup was different so he sent me a 6 speed cup (all of $14) and it fixed the shift action completely.

The integrated ball on the end of the factory gear lever is also different. The approximate diameters are:
5 speed & early 6 speed levers - 15mm ball with 19mm bush.
Late 6 speed levers - 18mm ball with 22mm bush

MR gear levers have one size integrated ball, with 2 different od bushes to suit.

The box ended up being an early NB1 (no Ill intent from seller) which did not fit my shifter, and I didn’t have the bits to make up a small bush shifter. The box’s sensors had the pig tails cut off, and I broke one of mine when swapping it onto the working box. The box also had a toasted rear seal thanks to its firey history, so I was down a shifter, rear seal and a sensor to make this box work.

Magpie offered me one of his spare sensors (thanks!) and someone else contacted me with a brand new sensor they did not need. They also had an NB2 6 speed which unpicked up as well (thanks!)

I have put a new seal in the NB1 box and have the sensors for it now. I will find the missing shifter bits, and will have a spare 6 speed if anyone is looking for one.

Anyway, I put the NB2 gearbox in this afternoon, and subject to a last bolt check, it’s all buttoned up again and ready for mischief.

By far the most time consuming bit was getting a single nut on the exhaust down pipe undone and done up. I even sacrificed a cheap SCA 12mm ring spanner to make a semi-open ring spanner. This should have helped but it turns out the spanner was too cheap and the remainder of the ring wasn’t strong enough to hold shape...

And that’s the end of my Christmas break

And The American helped out with a spare shifter (small bush) whilst I order the parts to rebuild mine!

The factory steel shifter tip and the factory bush are different diameters internal and external. Miata Roadster deal with this by having one tip size for all their shifters, with different bushes to complete the match to the box. Unfortunately the Mazda bushes don’t allow interchange with a simple factory bush swap.
