6 Hour Regularity Relay - Phillip Island - 4/5 Aug 2012

Postby Guran » Mon May 28, 2012 1:43 pm

The list of accepted teams for the Victorian 6 Hour Regularity Relay at Phillip Island has finally been released. Last year the MX-5 Club of NSW had one team. This year, we will be sending three teams and 12 drivers in total:

MX-5 Club of NSW - Team NA
Kevin Addison, 1991 MX-5 NA 1.8
Bryan Shedden, 1992 MX-5 NA 1.6
Ian Caldwell, 1994 MX-5 NA 1.8
Bob Gage, 1990 MX-5 NA 1.6

MX5 Club of NSW - Team NB
Mike Hicks, 2000 MX-5 NB 1.8
Stewart Temesvary, 1998 MX-5 NB 1.8
Tony King, 1998 MX-5 NB 1.8
Steve Green, 1999 MX-5 NB 1.8

MX5 Club of NSW - TeaMX5
Glenn Thomas, 2002 MX5 NB 1.8
Ray Estreich, 2004 MX5 SE
Leroy Day, 2008 Elfin MS8
Bob West, 2006 MX5 NC

There will also be two teams from the MX-5 Club of Victoria & Tasmania . Unfortunately most of the Vics, who might otherwise be interested, will be competing in sprints at Winton on 5th Aug. However, it'll still be an unofficial reprise of the Interstate Challenge. 8)

Two days at PI? Bring it on!

Can't wait. Always wanted to do p.I 6hr. Pity you can't do a longer stint, like winton 6hr. I remember my first 6hr at winton - did 1 hr straight in the turbo car, and came in with about a 1-2 liters of fuel. That was shifting at 6000rpm. It taught me more in that hour than any other track day there. Because you just keep going around and really learn the track. After a while I was able to drive the car slower, and do the same lap times. So for any of the guys that take part, it will be a huge advantage to be quicker as a driver. I have done a few laps at p.I, but still hope to refine my lines there. Even as a Victorian, you will only do about 3 p.i days a year, and have to remember everything from last time there doing 4 laps at a time. Good luck to everyone, you will need it, because I have tureo on my team....

Dave any lines you may have learnt go totally out the window at this event. With 50 cars on track with a huge variation in speed you find that there is grip everywhere and you can pass in places that will otherwise see you touring off track. Its great fun.

What a shame you guys couldn't get one more driver so you could enter three teams. Still one hour per day for each driver should still be a lot of fun. Having 50 cars at a time on track is going to be something very different, and much more challenging that supersprints. Looking forward to it!

If anyone from the NSW crew has a scheduling or car drama or is open to bribery I would love to do this event.

Awesome result today. Second place to MX5 Club of NSW - TeaMX5. Congrats to Glenn, Ray, Leroy & Bob. They only missed first place due to a penalty lap for passing under yellow flag (20m before the green flag). TeaMX5 NA finished 7th and TeaMX5 NB was 15th. Excellent result for all three teams and many thanks to our fantastic support crew.

Well done guys, not an event that you can afford many penalties as some of our guys found out. It makes the trip worthwhile if you get a good result...

Yes, well done to you all. As Lightyear said we suffered from penalties which put us out of contention. Still what a great weekend. Will definitely be back.

Definitely pays to study the pointscore system. 8) Score a single penalty lap and your score gets halved, two penalties and it's cut to one third, etc. Our strategy was to nominate an optimistic time and do everything to avoid penalties. My team got one penalty lap when I was 0.07s too fast on the only clear dry lap I had - we would have been 5th without that. I was the only one of our 12 drivers who broke their target, so mission accomplished apart from me.

Our team that came 2nd would have won it except for a controversial penalty for passing under yellow flag. Ray reckons he waited until he passed the green flag but there was another yellow at the next flag point - they pinged him anyway. :( His team did very well out of Glenn Thomas who earnt a stack of bonus laps - about 90 I think. A couple times he was within a few hundredths of his target, but unlike me it was on the right side. 8) A very well deserved result for his team!

I did not know Ray got a penalty till I read it here !!!
Must have been out in the wet when he was called up, AND THEY KEPT IT A SECRET !!.

Yes it was a great weekend and a great result.
It was my 4th 6 hour and I am thankfull I was asked to make up the numbers.
As my mother was born in NSW, only 1/2 of me defected interstate.

Have already copped a ribbing from some of the other regular competitors down here.
