Qld Raceway Sprints - Full Day

Postby JBT » Tue Apr 09, 2019 5:25 pm

Combined BMW Club Qld and MX-5 Club of Qld event.

When: 10 May 2019
Where: Qld Raceway Willowbank

Get your entries in ASAP. You can follow this link to enter: https://www.bmwcq.com.au/event-3163635

EVENT DETAILS:

Rnd 4 of the BMW Club Qld BTuned Sprint Series sees us return to the famous Paperclip, namely Qld Raceway, for our annual visit. A chance to experience the 3 main tracks there in a full day of sprint action. With no noise limits, this often brings out some awesome race cars that we don't see at Lakeside, so make sure you don't miss this one.

The cost is just $195 for BMWCQ and MX-5CQ members. $225 for non-members. Fantastic value for a full day.

Like always, we will have one of our experienced drivers doing a track walk in the morning, giving pointers on how best to approach driving QR and get the most out of your day. So an ideal day for all levels of driver, in both street and track cars.

I'll try to make it.

Sounds like a good opportunity to test the new suspension and diff.

I did QR without my LSD fitted, I reckon it will make a massive difference coming out of the last corner

The dipper (sprint) is ‘nasty’ with an open diff if you take the wrong line.

Also T4 in clubman will expose the weakness of an open diff.

That being said, if you take the appropriate line you can still be fast with an open diff.

The dipper (first crossover?) is plain nasty, the second crossover is the best bit on the whole circuit.

I disagree the 'dipper' on the sprint is the best part, well apart from getting T2 'perfect'.

Get your entries in now folks. Struggling to get the numbers for this day and questions are being asked.
Let you friends know if you can't make it - maybe they can.
It's a great value, well organised full day for $195 at a very safe venue.
Newbies and old hands all equally welcome.

Any explanation why? Were numbers declining last year, especially at the start of the year?

No, last year worked out well and Round 2 this year was break even.
Just seems to be a general lack of interest at this stage.
Maybe some are bored with Willowbank or, have spent all their spare cash over Easter or, their car is broken or, the blinker fluid needs to be replaced or, the tyres are too round.....

Come on guys, GET TO IT AND REGISTER!

Maybe people will sign up late, commitment phobia? The MX-5 club used to offer early bird specials, did that help to get early entries? Are the emails going out to ALL previous participants?

I had an idea to run group D under "Happy Laps" rules. So that it's easier for newbies to become involved, not so daunting. Combine that with running reverse order DCBA, so the newbies don't get panicked by seeing really fast cars running before they have had their first turn.

I do remember my first day at Lakeside standing at the back of the pits watching the group A cars come through and thinking to myself "Am I supposed to do that?" Then a Porsche GT3 spun on the exit of hungry corner on about lap 3 or 4 went across to the left side of the track backwards into the tyre wall. I was mightily impressed! And nervous!

Anyway just putting some ideas out there.

Sorry I'm heading off to Europe on May 1, so I can't make it to this one.

Edit: another idea might be to set up an MX-5 Club or QLD Motorsport Facebook page, I could maybe help out with that when I get back. Not that I'm any kind of digital marketing guru.

All I would have really liked for my first track day was a 'wing man' to help get the basics down. Now I try and help people just starting out (if the ask for help).

From a personal note my preference is not regularity even if it is cheaper than a 'normal' sprint day, hence I will only do a MX5 club track day if there is nothing else on. That being said I would also put car maintenance ahead of a club track day...

I keep the club membership for the CAMS licence at the moment.
