DIY cupholders !!

Postby feel_ixx » Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:20 am

These cupholders are made for the arm rest compartment in the NA Mx5, but I'm sure you can do these for anything.

Basically, all you need is some plastic, 2 hinges and some spray paint. The thing on the right is velcro straps, but I found I couldnt use them in the end.

Here is the cupholders before paint and hinge installation. To get to this stage I basically just measured out the compartment and drew it up on the plastic. You can get this cut out in less than 10 minutes at a workshop, or take 4 hours sanding, sawing and chiselling by hand like I did.

I used Tarzan Grip super glue to attach the hinge to the cupholder, and double stick padded tape from the hinge to the compartment. I tried to hot glue it, but either something is wrong with my glue sticks or the hinges REALLY doesn't like hot glue. If this doesnt hold, you may be forced to have to screw some holes in your compartment. I'm trying to avoid this.

And finally, the cup holders in action. Apologies for the dark photos, I took these in my dusty old dark garage.

Haha thanks guys. Sorry theres no template, I sort of just winged it. I measured out a template when I started, but I found that I had to make little modifications here and there, the rounded off corners were estimated. I didnt have the right measuring tools (a plastic ruler) and the holes were also sanded until my bottles could fit through the holes.. haha. Good luck though!

Excellent idea!

I saw a similar setup in my friends EG2 CRX del sol.

Will be doing it to mine soon !

I was actually thinking the cup holders placed where the ashtray is in the NA interferes with where your arm sits.

Haha, I actuallly got the idea from my friends old del sol CRX !

Also that same friend is thinking of making more of these, with proper measurements and real mounts etc, he is an industrial designer, stay tuned we may get some out on the market within the next few weeks.
