When was EGR introduced ? & engine light ?

Postby Patrick Bramston » Fri Feb 01, 2013 8:30 am

I have failed an EPA test because I do not have exhaust gas recirculation and an engine light on dash on my 1989 Australian delivered NA... The car is fitted with an NA8 engine and engineered for it..The aftermarket headers have and EGR valve which I guess confused the inspector but the intake manifold does not have anything for EGR...thanks patrick

im very sure the engine light is connected to the temp sensor on the cat.

I thought the Check engine light and the Cat pre-heat light were separate lights?
Japanese models had the Cat heat light, USA models the Check engine light.

Aussie ones shouldn't have either light.

If it's the cat heat light I'd just take the bulb out, who really cares if the cat's hot or not. (that and it's more likely the sensor's broken than the cat magically not heating up despite being in the exhaust stream)

Mine is made in 01/95 and ADR plated in 02/95. Never had EGR. Can pm you the engine number if it helps, Patrick.

Also, no cat temp sensor in an NA8, even for US models with EGR.

the engine is from a NA8 but the car is a 89. if its like the early eunos roadsters then there is a light for the cat sensor. I don't think that will matter for the epa test though, i think you were just unlucky and got a noob.

Yh, I know the car. Patrick's problem is partly that he's in Bulahdelah and there aren't many NA8s to look at around there.
Aus delivered NA8s do have a check engine light. It's dríven by pin 1E in the stock ECU. Patrick's car is running a Megasquirt, isn't it? Is there provision in the MS to operate a simple neon light mounted in a hole in the dash somewhere?

edit: the wiring diagrams say the CEL comes out of pin 1C in the NA6 ECU but I think it's really still 1E. In any case in both models it's a yellow-black wire out of the ECU.

The EPA are now saying that because my car has a 1.8 litre engine it needs to have an engine check light..I do not know if a Haltech E8 has a provision for one. They still want the EGR connected because it is a 1.8litre engine.. Looking for proof that NA8's did not have EGR...patrick

Hi Patrick,

I can confirm with the above posts.

JDM NA6 - had heated cat light
USD NA6 - Had engine check light
AUDM NA6 - No heated cat light or engine check light

NA8 stock engines do not have EGR pipe but interesting enough the stock headers has a blank stop for EGR.

I think you got really unlucky with because of your aftermarket header included a EGR spot which must of tricked your assessor aswell as having a updated engine he must of been expecting a check engine light and other emission items. I think the only thing you can do is change your headers back to stock, as well show them at the AUDM na8 engines never came with EGR or check engine light. If this fails well your screwed

No, NA8s do come with a check engine light, so Patrick's asking the right question about the Haltech outputs. I don't know what we can do about the EGR. We could all drive our NA8s to Bulahdelah to show this idiot we don't have EGR. Can you get a statement out of Mazda about it? Does anyone have a useful contact in Mazda for that?

Ask RMS what authority they are quoting regarding EGR being fitted to Australian Domestic Market NA8 & ask them for proof of same. The authority won't be Australian because EGR wasn't fitted to the 1993-1995 inclusive NA8, at the very least.

the guy from the EPA has been on this forum in his lunch break.. Nelson 92 has a 94 NA8 for sale and he has a picture of the head with rocker cover removed and there looks to be a EGR valve under a spark plug lead..
