Starter motor removal/replacement

Postby lonesailor » Fri Mar 22, 2019 10:27 am

Has anyone removed and replaced a starter on an NA8? Plenty of videos on U tube for LHD cars but they have less s**t in the way. It looks to me like it can be done ,with difficulty, through the wheel well and underneath.but I'm concerned that I wont be able to get it out when I get it unbolted, the oil filter causes enough trouble and it's a lot smaller. Mine needs to come out as the solenoid contacts seem to be faulty, it's happened twice lately, this has happened to me a couple of times before in different cars. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

It’s a real pain the backside. It’s almost easier to remove the whole engine with the right equipment.

As mentioned above, it's fiddly but can be done, I did it when I had mine years ago.

it's doable in the car.

From memory one bolt is an absolute bastard to get out, and is usually super tight as well.
you can get away with leaving that one off when you re-assemble from memory. My GF's NA was like that for years.

I eventually removed the intake manifold, it made getting the starter out a breeze but replacing and tightening the bottom bolts on the manifold is somewhat "Character building" all is now good now however

Sounds like a terrible job. Good luck.

Can be done but access to a hoist will make it so much easier.
