What ECU are you running?
That will be a big factor in tuner.

I took my car to Chequered a while back with an Adaptronic
Tune was never right and I got the impression he really didn't want to deal with the Adaptronic on MX5's. (which is fine, but it would have been better if he just said no at the start rather than telling me he could do it)

Tuning will never be cheap, since it takes a fair bit of time for them to get the car fully sorted (or not sorted in my case.....)

Youre paying for someone to change settings using experience, until it runs it's best, within their time limits and ability.

It's like asking "How much should a lasagne cost?"

Depends if its from the tuck shop or a Michelin Star restaurant. Same thing, different quality.

Problem is, dyno tunes all cost Michelin Star Restaurant prices. I've never seen a cheap/budget/economical tune being offered.

what 's a fair dollar per hour? $500 for no responsobility?

If you think it takes 2 hours and there is no responsibility involved you should change jobs and become a tuner.

The initial tune on mine took 2 days.

1st was a full day of tuning, second was a couple of hours of cold start work.

Then there was another few hours of work on starts in different temps, and more work on transient throttle, and some more on the tune in general.


That was all part of the initial price, and from memory further work beyond that was going to cost $200 and hour if I recall.

I didnt bother to continue with the tuner, since after each visit the car would still drive terribly and I wasnt seeing any improvement, I lost confidence in their ability to actually do the tune since each time they'd tell me it was sorted, only for me to find that it was barely drivable.
I decided to cut my losses and not return after that.

Same here. Tune took all day. Drove horribly. Took it back twice (two half days). Sort of OK now. Reluctant to take it back as it too was I think $150 per hour.
This is the recommended guy.

Also bear in mind, tuning isnt simply a "drop it off saturday morning and it'll be done by Sunday"

it will pretty much always need a few visits to get bits sorted/

Ideally, a good tuner will get it driving well and fairly close on the first visit.
Then after a bit of driving you'll make notes on little faults and bring it back for them to be fixed.

Then when cold/hot weather hits you'll likely need to take it back again for a little more work for those conditions. (since on a 30deg day they'll need to make some estimates on settings for a 2deg morning)


The more experienced with a certain car/setup the tuner is, the closer those estimates are to correct.

For example, someone like Dann would likely be able to get it pretty much spot on first go, since he's done a shitload of MX5's with similar setups.
Conversely, if someone bought in a totally different car, or an MX5 with a strange setup, he may not get it as close since he may not have worked on anything like that before.

It typically takes me 1 hour on the dyno and an additional 4-6 hours over a few cold mornings and lunchtime test drives.

I have to send these cars 1000km home and directly to a racetrack half of the time, so yeah its absolutely my responsibility to get it 100% the first time.
